!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , from 2013 compared Car Enthusiasm with washing machines enthusiasm, explaining why we must accept that some people just see cars as Appliances. It was reposted to the Front Page and read over 100,000 times.
Well, meet this guy:
He IS a Washing Machine enthusiast.

I still don’t think it’s a fair comparison. Airplanes are a much better example. I know a few brand names (Boeing, Cessna, etc.) and can point out a “cool” plane if I see one, but I don’t know anything about them. I couldn’t name one that I saw. I can’t understand why some people own more than one.
But at least I can understand why people like them. They do something.

You can’t spend your entire income on airplanes and fill your house with them.

There are vacuum cleaner “enthusiasts” out there too.

I restore old wringer washers. There’s a ‘classic washer’ community out there as well.

Sounds like a wager to me

Sure you can. There are definitely airplane collectors out there. People with a private hangar housing ten different planes, a house with every inch of shelving occupied by model jets, and - like we may have a lamp made from a camshaft or an engine block coffee table - a ceiling fan made from the propeller of their very first plane.
Same thing goes for boats. Vehicles, even to a non-enthusiast, are not literally just appliances. Anyone can tell the difference, but only some people fall in love with that difference.

I think it is a nice comparison because you understand airplane enthusiasm to some extent, because you understand car enthusiasm.
But there are people who can absolutely not understand why anyone would have anything beyond a Camry with some nice toys. You have room, over 250hp, leather seats and a decent audio system. Need more room and power? Here’s an SUV/Truck. That’s basically how I see a Washing Machine.
I need to wash my clothes. Mine has several settings for load, colored, white, warm, pre wash and is big enough to handle my load , reliable and when it broke the bill wasn’t high. It’s perfect! It costs 1/10th of what some other Washing Machines in the store cost, and I can’t wrap my head around what could make one better than what mine is. And if I eventually have kids, I’ll buy a bigger one. And that’s basically it and that’s all I care about them.

Well, damn.
That’s interesting. Especially because we, as car enthusiasts, would find it fun to drive an old Jaguar D-Type and have our faces covered in Oil after a day of rallying because that’s part of the charm of vintage racing. I wonder if these enthusiasts find some charm in oil spots.

Well ...

I guess.
Although, maybe guns would be a better comparison, and this is coming from someone who strongly supports very strict gun control laws. I see the appeal of target shooting and I could have fun doing it, but I don’t see the appeal of anything else. I especially don’t see the appeal of owning one at all.
Similar to how even a cyclist who doesn’t own a car and never plans on it would be able to enjoy a night out go-karting. It’s the fact that you’re actually doing something that makes it fun, and that’s the same way I see guns.
Washing machines do all the work for you, and there’s no recreational version of them. Cars are brought into the public eye by go karts, slot cars, video games, etc. and they’re the subject of some of the biggest sporting events in the world. Even if you don’t want anything fancy for yourself, you can’t possibly be that clueless about their appeal. It’s obvious that they’re something special, even if you just don’t get it.

It’s really very much the same. There’s folks who just want to put them together and get them running and there’s purists who argue that everything should be stock and replacement parts period appropriate. You can get them all pissed off by replacing an old motor with a new brushless. Some people do agitator/tub/whatever swaps to make them ‘better’ and others flip out when they do that. People even argue about the correct paint color...
Many early models actually were actually gas powered so the holy grail is an unrestored but maintained gas powered model. I’ve never actually seen one, most were converted to electric if they weren’t tossed.
I haven’t actually had one in a year or two. I pick them up when I run into them at antique shops for <70 bucks, get them back up and running then sell them to hippies on craigslist for a couple hundred bucks.

Holy crap this is amazing! It really sounds a lot like car enthusiasm.

That’s an excellent point.
But I can’t help but believe that the reason we have go karts is because it’s easier to find entertainment in it and the same goes for sports cars. They have no real functionality except for enjoying it as recreation and it makes the whole thing more popular.
The main differences between car vs washing machine are that cars have an easier to grasp entertainment value and therefore a much bigger enthusiast community. Some people, like the guy in the video, see entertainment in the washing process and there are probably DOZENS of people around the world who can see it too. Dozens! And I just wonder how the world would be if a couple million of people could see this too. Maybe that would make the companies open branches of “enthusiast” washing machines, with some equivalent to an Alpha 4C.
